I
began collecting Little Tikes Play Toys and casting
them in cement. By altering the original plastic
forms all straightforward recognition is suspended.
This allows for one’s own personal narrative
to exist within the overarching one.
When using Little Tikes Toys, in Heavy House the one-to-one shift in
material from plastic to cast concrete is a primary concern. The concrete
infers that the forms are now permanent and monumental. The pockmarked
surface and the monochromatic gray, gives them the ghost-like appearance
of a ruin. I began to experiment with manipulating the plastic forms
and casting multiple generations using the same mold. This removes the
object even further from its original appearance. Doing so interjects
a new narrative and many of the reformations take on an almost human
like character.
