Alone
in a Crowd
When
I go to a party I inevitably walk in on a crowd.
My eyes dart around searching for a familiar face
or a safe port -- the kitchen, bar or a table with
chips and dip -- some way to merge with the crowd
or at least escape the hazing carpet in front of
the door. I imagine someone else who sees those
eyes and thinks differently: "Yeah, that's
right, I am here."
Crowds are different from people. One person is one mind but twelve people
are twelve minds plus a crowd mind, a mind not responsible to anyone, a mind
which will disappear with the crowd, a mind without a memory.
This sculpture is a self-administered Rorschach test: a crowd without social
queues, without gender or race or fashion or religion, without sexual orientation
or facial expression. Your reaction is to the thirteenth mind, the crowd without
the people.
